It is crucial to adapt the processing of forest bio-resources into biochemicals and bio-based advanced materials in order to transform the current economic climate into a greener economy. Tall oil, as a by-product of the Kraft process of wood pulp manufacture, is a promising resource for the extraction of various value-added products. Tall oil fatty acids-based multifunctional Michael acceptor acrylates were developed. The suitability of developed acrylates for polymerization with tall oil fatty acids-based Michael donor acetoacetates to form a highly cross-linked polymer material via the Michael addition was investigated. With this novel strategy, valuable chemicals and innovative polymer materials can be produced from tall oil in an entirely new way, making a significant contribution to the development of a forest-based bioeconomy. Two different tall oil-based acrylates were successfully synthesized and characterized. Synthesized acrylates were successfully used in the synthesis of bio-based thermoset polymers. Obtained polymers had a wide variety of mechanical and thermal properties (glass transition temperature from -12.1 to 29.6 °C by dynamic mechanical analysis, Young's modulus from 15 to 1 760 MPa, and stress at break from 0.9 to 16.1 MPa). Gel permeation chromatography, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization-time of flight mass spectrometry, and nuclear magnetic resonance were used to analyse the chemical structure of synthesized acrylates. In addition, various titration methods and rheology tests were applied to characterize acrylates. The chemical composition and thermal and mechanical properties of the developed polymers were studied by using FT-IR, solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance, thermal gravimetric analysis, differential scanning calorimetry, dynamic mechanical analysis, and universal strength testing apparatus. The objective in this work was to obtain a fine fraction of kraft pulp, with as high concentration as possible, in a pilot-scale fractionation with micro-perforated screen baskets. The influence of screen basket surface, hole size, feed concentration, pulp type and refining segment design was investigated. The results showed that a smooth screen basket surface improved the fractionation efficiency of the unrefined pulp compared to a profiled screen basket, despite a larger hole size. A significantly higher fine fraction concentration was obtained when using refined hardwood pulp compared to when using softwood pulp, which was explained with its lower average fibre length and narrower and thus more flexible fibre fragments. The pilot trials also showed that the screening process could be operated at feed concentrations similar to those directly after a refiner, 30–40 g/l. This was demonstrated in a process layout with partial recirculation where a refiner and a micro-perforated screen basket were operated in series in pilot scale. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The bleaching sector of the wood pulp industry is its largest effluent generator. The aim of this study was to reuse the bleaching filtrate in order to reduce water consumption. The experiment was conducted by simulating the D0(EP)D1 bleaching sequence and recirculating different amounts of filtrate from the oxidation stage to control the pulp consistency of the delignification stage (pre-O). Physical, mechanical, chemical and optical properties of the pulp were studied. The accumulation of the non-process elements (NPE) and their effects were evaluated with the Aspen-Plus® computer simulator. The results of the computational modeling were satisfactory. The recirculation of filtrates increased the saturation index of the system by 19 %, but remained at sub-saturation levels. The pulp viscosity and elongation remained statistically stable. Recirculation of up to 50 % of the filtrate did not produce differences in pulp brightness; however, there were slight losses in the pulp resistances. In order to maintain 84 % ISO brightness, there was a higher consumption of the bleaching reagents. Up to 50 % of recirculation of the filtrates was accomplished without jeopardizing the system and the pulp quality and resulted in a savings of 55 m3 h−1 of water – 7 % of the consumption of the entire mill. Highlights • RCs from three plant-derived celluloses have similar networked morphologies. • Pickering emulsions can be stabilized by the three RCs. • The droplet sizes remained unchanged after seven days of storage for all emulsions. • RC source plays an important role in properties of its suspensions and emulsions. Abstract Regenerated cellulose (RC) has attracted interest for stabilizing emulsions effectively via both Pickering and networking mechanisms. In this study, RCs were prepared from three plant-derived celluloses (wood pulp, bamboo pulp and cotton fabric). The three RCs had similar morphological networks, but their viscosities were 0.55 Pa s, 1.47 Pa s and 2.29 Pa s, respectively. The properties of Pickering emulsions stabilized by the RCs were investigated. The results revealed that the droplet sizes and viscosities of the three emulsions varied. After seven days of storage, the droplet sizes of the emulsions remained unchanged, but the viscosities of the emulsions from wood pulp, bamboo pulp and cotton fabric increased by 163%, 115% and 9%, respectively. These findings demonstrate that the source of RC plays an important role in determining the properties of the resulting suspensions and emulsions, thereby providing guidelines for the preparation of RC-based green emulsions for applications in cosmetics and related formulations. Poplar wood pulp was adopted as both frame and precursor for the synthesis of pulp fiber (PF)/reduced graphene oxide composite via a simple and low-cost method. In this method, the PF based on graphene (PFG) composite film electrode was prepared by a simple vacuum filtration process with various ratios (PF: reduced graphene oxide (RGO) = 5:1, PF:RGO = 5:2, PF:RGO = 5:3, PF:RGO = 5:4, PF:RGO = 5:5). In terms of special structures, the PFG can be used as electrodes without metal-collector, adhesives, and additives. The optimal ratio (PF:RGO = 5:4) film electrode displayed a high areal-specific capacitance of 683 mF/cm2 at 1 mA/cm2 with a mass of 5.3 mg/cm2 (specific capacitance of 129 F/g) and good cycling stability (87.5% capacitance retention after 10,000 cycles at 5 mA/cm2) as well as excellent rate capability and high flexibility (suitable for any angle, even 180°). Moreover, the device could possess a maximum energy density of 47.71 μWh/cm2 and a maximum power density of 1251 μW/cm2. Chlorine bleaching technology (C process, CEH process, H process and theirs combination), which was identified as a primary formation source of PCDD/Fs, is still widely used by the vast majority of Chinese non-wood pulp and paper mills (non-wood PMs). The purpose of this study was to provide information and data support for further eliminating dioxin for non-wood PMs in China, and especially to evaluate the PCDD/Fs release reduction for those mills converting their pulp bleaching processes from CEH to ECF. The PCDD/Fs concentrations of the bleached pulp and bleaching wastewater with ECF bleaching were in the ranges of 0.13–0.8 ng TEQ kg −1 , and 0.15–1.9 pg TEQ L −1 , respectively, which were far lower than those with CEH process, indicating that the ECF process is an effective alternative bleaching technology to replace CEH in Chinese non-wood PMs to reduce dioxin release. The release factor via flue gas of the alkali recovery boiler in Chinese non-wood PMs was first reported to be 0.092 μg TEQ Ad t −1 in this study. On the assumption that pulp bleaching processes of all Chinese non-wood PMs were converted from CEH to ECF, the annual release of PCDD/Fs via the bleaching wastewater and bleached pulp would be reduced by 79.1%, with a total of 1.60 g TEQ. In this paper, we investigate the determinants of decline in energy intensity in four Chinese industries--pulp and paper, cement, iron and steel, and aluminum. This paper attempts to answer the following key question: For the purpose of promoting energy efficiency, do prices, technology, enterprise restructuring and other policy-related instruments affect various sectors uniformly so as to justify uniform industrial energy conservation policies, or do different industries respond significantly differently so as to require policies that are tailored to each sector separately? In this paper, we examine this question using data for China's most energy-intensive large and medium-size enterprises over the period 1999-2004. Our results suggest that in all four industries rising energy costs are a significant contributor to the decline in energy intensity over our period of study. China's industrial policies encouraging consolidations and scale economies also seem to have contributed to reductions in energy intensity in these four industries.Keywords: China, Energy intensity, Industrial sector, I. Due to the emergence of trade unionism throughout the U.S. industry, new needs and new jobs were created for international unions. The objective of the training of union stewards in the pulp and paper industry is to stimulate activity among the men and women who represent the local union. The activity will depends upon the local union and the location of the community.

OS-20 nonionic surfactant produced in Russia was used as a depitching additive in bisulfite pulping. OS-20 ensures efficient depitching of bisulfite pulp produced from various kinds of wood (spruce, aspen, birch wood or their blends). The strongest decrease in the total and 'harmful' pitch content in pulping in the presence of the surfactant was reached for spruce and aspen wood and for the blend of spruce and birch wood. Cellulosic fiber introducing with photochromic properties can be used in many fields such as security packaging, printing paper, and rewritable paper. To introduce photochromic property to individual fiber, a polyelectrolyte composite layer composed of cationic chitosan (CS) and anionic carboxyl–containing spiropyran (SPCOOH) on pulp fibers was designed using layer-by-layer assembly technique. Scanning electron microscope observation showed that the SPCOOH was successfully absorbed onto the surface of fiber. The photochromic characteristic of LbL–treated fiber could be triggered by UV–vis absorption spectrum and the LbL–treated fibers had a good compatibility with pulp fibers.
